Understand Renner product codes

Decode the letters and numbers used to identify lacquers, topcoats, stains, catalysts, additives, and colorants.

A Renner code is a compact description of the product family. Reading the prefix first helps you understand where the material belongs in a finishing schedule.

Start with the prefix

The opening letters identify the broad coating type. In the catalog, YL identifies water-based lacquer and YM identifies water-based topcoat. Other families use their own prefixes for stains, catalysts, additives, and specialty materials.

Then read the product number

The number identifies the specific formulation within that family. Additional suffixes can distinguish color, sheen, or regional formulation. Match the full code—not only the leading number—when reordering.

Build a system, not a list of cans

A code should always be checked against the technical data sheet for its substrate, compatible sealer or topcoat, catalyst, reduction, and application instructions.

  • Record the complete product code
  • Record catalyst and mix ratio
  • Record sheen and color
  • Keep the technical data sheet with the job schedule
