What are you fastening into?

Pick the fastener by the wall

Block, stucco, drywall, wood, metal, tile — the wall decides the fastener.

What are you fastening into?

The question that narrows it down fast

In South Florida the wall material decides the fastener. Here's how we steer people at the counter.

Concrete block & stucco

Most South Florida exterior walls

  • Concrete screws (Tapcon) with the matching carbide bit
  • Sleeve or wedge anchors for heavy loads
  • Stainless hardware anywhere near salt air

Watch out: Plastic conical anchors in stucco — the stucco crumbles and the anchor spins.

Drywall — no stud

Shelves, mirrors, TV brackets, curtain rods

  • Self-drilling threaded anchors up to ~50 lb
  • Toggle or snaptoggle bolts for heavy or overhead loads
  • Plastic anchors only for light décor

Watch out: Trusting a drywall anchor with a swinging or shock load — hit a stud instead.

Wood stud & framing

Cabinets, ledgers, blocking, framing

  • Structural construction screws instead of lag bolts
  • Coarse-thread drywall screws for board only
  • Wood screws with a pilot hole in hardwood

Watch out: Drywall screws for structure — they're brittle and snap under shear.

Pressure-treated & outdoors

Decks, fences, docks, gates

  • Stainless 305/316 near the water
  • Polymer-coated deck screws rated for ACQ lumber
  • Hot-dip galvanized for structural connectors

Watch out: Plain zinc — modern treated lumber eats it in a season.

Tile, plaster & terrazzo

Bathrooms, older Delray homes

  • Masonry bit on low speed, no hammer, to start the hole
  • Plastic or sleeve anchor sized to the hole behind the tile
  • Toggle bolt if the cavity is hollow

Watch out: Hammer drilling through glazed tile — it spiders the surface.

Metal studs & sheet metal

Commercial build-outs, hurricane panels

  • Fine-thread drywall screws for board on steel studs
  • Self-drilling (TEK) screws through metal
  • Machine screws with nuts or rivnuts for removable parts

Watch out: Coarse-thread screws in steel studs — they strip instead of grabbing.
