How to sample
Use the poster board, not the wall
A sample painted on one wall is stuck in one light. A board moves with you.
Two coats on a finished board
We sell a sample poster board with a finished side that behaves like a primed wall. Brush two full coats of your sample pint on the finished side and let it cure so the color and sheen read true.
Walk it around the house
Hold the board on each wall, next to your flooring, cabinets, countertop and fabrics, and check it in morning, afternoon and lamp light. Color shifts noticeably in Florida light.
Narrow to two, then commit
Sample two or three candidates in the product and sheen you actually plan to buy, then bring the winner to our counter and we'll tint your gallons to match.
A few samples is the cheapest part of the job
Yes, buying several sample pints adds up. It's nothing compared to the cost of repainting a room you're unhappy with — the paint, the labor, and the weekend all over again. Taking the time and spending a little to land on exactly the right color is well worth it.

Step by step
Same board, same color, four different rooms
Color is not fixed. The exact same paint shifts warmer, cooler, lighter and darker depending on the light hitting it, the floor bouncing light back up, and what's on the wall next to it. This is how to see those shifts before you commit.
Step 1
Brush two full coats on a board
Paint the finished side of a sample poster board — two full coats, edge to edge, and let it cure. One thin coat reads lighter than the real thing and will lie to you.
Step 2
Check it in bright, direct sun
Strong Florida daylight washes a color out and pushes it lighter and warmer. A color that felt safe on the chip can read almost white on a south-facing wall at noon.
Step 3
Move it into the shade
In a shaded corner or a north-facing room the same paint goes cooler and deeper, and green, gray or violet undertones you never noticed step forward.
Step 4
Look again under lamp light
At night, warm bulbs add yellow and LEDs add blue. Rooms you live in after dark should be judged after dark, next to the lamps you actually use.
For the truest read, sample a quart in your actual product and sheen
A sample pint is a color tester, not the finished product. The same color can look slightly different once it's mixed in the paint line and sheen you actually buy — Regal Select in eggshell reflects light differently than Aura in matte, and that changes how the undertone reads on your wall. When a color has to be exactly right, we recommend buying a quart of the real product and sheen you plan to use, and brushing your board with that.
