Sheen comparison
Eggshell vs. Satin
Eggshell or satin for your walls? Compare shine, washability, and how each hides drywall flaws — with Benjamin Moore product picks from a Delray Beach paint store.
Short answer
Eggshell is the safer wall choice: less shine, hides more, looks right in almost any room. Satin is a step up in durability and moisture resistance, but it shows wall imperfections and is usually better on trim than on a large wall.
This is the pair people agonize over when repainting a whole house. Both are wall-appropriate, both clean up reasonably, and the difference is subtle on a small chip — but across a twelve-foot wall in raking window light, it is obvious.
| Eggshell | Satin | |
|---|---|---|
| Shine | Barely there. A faint glow only visible when light rakes across the wall. | Clearly visible sheen. The wall reads as slightly reflective from across the room. |
| Hiding imperfections | Good. Handles average drywall, minor patches, and older walls. | Weak. Highlights patches, roller lap marks, and any texture change. |
| Washability | Good in a premium line like Regal Select or Aura; mediocre in a budget paint. | Very good. Repeated cleaning without burnishing. |
| Best surface | Walls throughout the house — the standard American wall sheen. | Trim, doors, kitchens, baths, and utility spaces. |
| Touch-ups | Touches up fairly cleanly with a matching batch. | Touch-ups often flash and show as a spot. Plan on painting corner to corner. |

- You're painting bedrooms, living rooms, or hallways.
- The walls are older, patched, or textured.
- You want a look that flatters color rather than shine.
- You expect to do occasional touch-ups rather than full repaints.

Frequently asked
- Is eggshell washable enough for a hallway?
- In a premium line, yes. Regal Select or Aura in eggshell will take regular wiping in a hallway. If you have kids and bikes and backpacks hitting that wall, ask about Scuff-X instead — it delivers scuff resistance at a low sheen.
- What is between eggshell and satin?
- Benjamin Moore makes Pearl, which sits right in that gap at about 25–35 gloss units. It is our most-recommended sheen for South Florida bathrooms because it resists moisture without making the wall look shiny.
- Which sheen is more popular for whole-house interiors?
- Eggshell and matte together account for the large majority of interior wall gallons we tint. Satin on walls is far more common in rentals, laundry rooms, and coastal condos where cleaning frequency matters more than looks.
