Benjamin Moore ADVANCE

Waterborne alkyd for cabinets, doors, and trim — a furniture-smooth finish that cleans up with water.

ADVANCE solves the old trade-off. Oil paint laid down beautifully on trim and cabinets but smelled awful, yellowed, and took forever. Latex was easy but showed every brush mark. ADVANCE is a waterborne alkyd: it flows out like oil and cleans up with water.

The long open time is the point — the paint stays wet long enough to level itself, so brush and roller marks disappear as it dries. That's what makes it the cabinet paint we recommend.

It also means patience. ADVANCE needs real cure time between coats, and the finish keeps hardening for days after it looks dry.

Priced near the top of the line, but you're buying a finish that's hard to get any other way without spray equipment.

Questions

Benjamin Moore ADVANCE — common questions

What people actually ask us at the counter.

How long should I wait between coats of ADVANCE?

Give it a full 16 hours before recoating — longer in humid weather. Rushing the second coat is the single most common way people ruin an ADVANCE cabinet job.

How long until cabinets can be used normally?

Handle them gently for the first week. The film keeps hardening for up to 30 days, so avoid heavy cleaning or taping anything to the doors during that window.

Do I need to prime cabinets before ADVANCE?

Yes on anything slick, stained, or previously oil-painted. Clean and degrease first, scuff sand, then prime — STIX or Fresh Start depending on the substrate. We'll pick the primer with you at the counter.

Which sheen for kitchen cabinets?

Satin or semi-gloss. Satin hides more, semi-gloss cleans better and reads more traditional. Most of our cabinet customers land on satin.
