The one rule to remember
Openness is a property of the material, not of the product name. If a fabric lets light through, it lets light through — mounting, motorization, and price change nothing about that. And any light the treatment doesn't stop will find the gap at the jamb, the sill, or the top.

The distinctions that matter most, answered plainly.
What window treatment lets me see out while it's down?
Anything with openness in the material or a vane that tilts: banded and Allure shades, sheer shadings such as Silhouette and Luminette, solar screen shades in the daytime, blinds with the slats tilted, and sliding panels in a screen fabric. All of them reverse after dark — once interior lights are on, the same openness that let you see out lets people see in.
What's the difference between room darkening and blackout?
Room darkening means the material blocks light. Blackout means the material blocks light and the perimeter is handled too. A blackout fabric on an inside mount without side channels still leaks around the jambs and sill. For true blackout, specify side channels, an outside mount with real overlap, or a drapery layer over the shade.
Are room-darkening sheer shadings blackout?
No. Room-darkening vanes dim a room considerably, but they're soft vanes — light still passes between them at the edges. If someone in that room sleeps during the day, layer a blackout drapery or a blackout roller behind the sheer shading.
Which treatments completely clear the window when they're open?
Roller shades, cellular and pleated shades, Roman shades, blinds, sheer shadings, banded shades, and woven woods all stack at the head. Sliding panels stack left or right. Fully operable draw draperies stack to the sides. Shutters swing open, though the frame and stiles stay in the opening.
What's best for a sliding glass door?
Sliding panels, sheer verticals, vertical blinds, ripplefold drapery on a traversing track, or coupled roller shades. The deciding question is which side the stack lives on so it clears the door panel you actually use.
Do I have to decide all of this before I come in?
Not at all. The finder narrows it to a short list; the showroom is where you handle the samples, see the openness factors against real daylight, and get a measured quote. Most people change their mind at least once once they see the fabrics.
