Paint Primers
Primers are one of the most misunderstood categories. There are two basic reason to prime a surface. The first is to promote adhesion to the substrate when conventional paints will not. These types of surfaces are usually hard, slick , shiny surfaces such are stainless steel, plastic laminates, high gloss oil paints, etc. The second function is to create hold out, which is the ability of the coating to seal the surfaces and make it nonporous, so that all subsequent coatings can go on uniformly. This is one of my arguments against, all these so called self priming paints. There are many different primers, for many different reasons. So it is important to read all the product data sheets to make sure you select the right one.
